George Dixon

Have you ever wondered who the boxer in our logo is? His name was George Dixon and he was Canada’s first professional boxer.

Dixon was born in 1870 in Africville, Nova Scotia. Nicknamed “Little Chocolate” he stood 5 feet 3.5 inches tall and weighed only 87 pounds when he began his professional boxing career.  Dixon was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1955, the Ring Magazine Hall of Fame in 1956 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame as a first-class inductee in 1990.

The History of Boxing (in Nelson)

By Catherine Fisher, Front Desk Coordinator, Nelson Boxing Club

I recently visited the Shawn Lamb Archives at the Touchstones Museum and the University of British Columbia’s newspaper archives to find out more about the boxing history of the area. Over the next few months I’ll share findings. Today’s musing on the value of boxing was originally published in the Nelson Miner newspaper May 23, 1891.

Book Talk: Facing Ali. In conversation with coach Peter Bockner

Blogger: Catherine Fisher, Front Desk Coordinator

You may have seen our little boxing library at the club. You can take out books for free as long as you return them. This is the first in a series of boxing book posts.

Yesterday I chatted with boxing coach Peter Bockner about his favourite boxing book, which is Facing Ali, by Canadian journalist Stephen Brunt. Brunt interviewed 15 boxers who faced Muhammad Ali in the ring, discussing their bouts against Muhammad Ali as well as their own lives and careers. Boxers profiled in the book include George Chuvalo, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Chuck Wepner, Larry Holmes, and others.

Catherine: What about Facing Ali interests you the most, Peter?

Peter: I found all of the guys interesting in their own right. The book talks about the moment in time they met Ali as well as the impact on them at the time and afterwards.

Catherine: How did you find out about the book?

Peter: I think I read about it in Ring Magazine and later found a copy at the Salvation Army.

Catherine: Any favourite chapters?

Peter: I really enjoyed the Joe Frazier and George Chuvalo fights.
